WORLD RELIGIONS

In this series of presentations, each religion will be discussed as an effective way to explore spirituality and the search for the divine. The presentations stress what is best in each religion, focusing on beliefs and practices that have shaped the world and that can deepen an individual's own faith development. The presentations are constructed to be both informative and practical.
February 16 - How to talk about religion: This introductory session introduces religious terminology and methods for examining world religions.
February 23 - Judaism: Jews find it amazing that though they are a minority religion (only 13 million in the world today), God chose them to bring holiness to the world. This study focuses on Jewish contributions to religious insights and the special beliefs and practices that distinguish Judaism.
March 2 - Judaism: beliefs and practices continued.
March 16 - Islam: Islam is the fastest-growing major religion and second in size only to Christianity. Perhaps it is also the most misunderstood religion -- especially in the West where the actions of some extremists are seen as representing the entire Islamic world. This discussion focuses on the life of Mohammed; his teachings in the Koran and the Hadith; the major divisions in Islam; and Sufism, the mystical branch of Islam.
March 23 - Islam: beliefs and practices continued.
March 9 is Ash Wednesday - no session scheduled.
