Lent 2012 - Seeing the Human Jesus
Presented by: Jerry Leitner, M.A., Theology
Wednesday, February 29 and March 7, 2012, 7:00pm-9:00pm
Catholic teaching stresses that from the moment of conception Jesus was totally human and totally divine. However, this two-p-art discussion focuses on Jesus’ humanity for several reasons: Stressing Jesus’ divinity underplays his humanity. For example, whenever Jesus utters a profound parable or works a miracle, it’s normal to respond: “Sure, it’s easy for him—he’s God,” and then we dismiss his actions as beyond our ability. Also, by stressing Jesus’ divinity, we often imagine him role-playing his life on earth, as though following a divine script. We might picture Jesus as a child pretending to “learn” the Hebrew scripture, but with his mind wandering to the far corners of the universe, because, after all, he’s actually the creator God. (By the way: Jesus role-=playing his way through his human existence is a heresy called Docetism.) Seeing the human Jesus in his first-century context intensifies the impact of his actions and message. We witness him reacting to really people and real events, growing in the understanding of his mission (Luke 2:52) and risking his life for the sake of that mission. This is the Jesus who calls us—as he did his disciples—to come and follow him. Fee: $20. Contact Mary Whiteside to register at 847-907-3450 or mwhiteside@holyfamilyparish.org
