Since Pat’s death there have been so many expressions of sadness and condolence, but also many expressions of gratitude for the impact of Pat’s faith and ministry on so many people. In keeping with our Advent theme, Pat climbed many physical, emotional, and spiritual mountains. He climbed those mountains with so many of you, sharing his brilliant insights and his personal struggles along the way. So many have found his personal sharing in homilies a conduit for connections in the Holy Spirit and a touching vehicle for the gospel values of healing and forgiveness to be expressed.
Some comments I have heard include: “I wouldn’t be a Catholic if not for Pat Brennan.” “I wouldn’t have stayed in the Catholic Church if not for Pat Brennan.” I was so inspired by his courage in fighting for the PADS program here at Holy Family.” “Pat Brennan didn’t let little rules get in his way.”
Many people on staff shared how Pat personally tapped them and asked them to be a minister in this church. Many said that they didn’t think they could do what he was asking them to do but he somehow made them feel that they could – and his confidence in them raised him up.
Many of you commented on how proud Pat was of Holy Family and the dynamic place that it is and has become. He brought resources here from around the world because he has become internationally known for his writing and speaking, particularly about evangelization. One staff member simply said, “His reach and influence spread far and wide.”
Many of you commented on how articulate Pat was. “He was able to synthesize ideas, thoughts and concepts beautifully.”
Pat Brennan named our Cross of New Life, a project begun by our founding pastor, Fr. Med Laz. Pat’s death can give us new life and inspiration as we continue to define what a progressive parish is and further defining and implementing a progressive Catholic community has become a primary focus of my ministry with you.
Rest in peace, Pat. Revel in the new life that you share with God, Jesus Christ, Mary and all the saints.
